AUSTRALIAN retail sales fell 0.1 per cent to a seasonally adjusted $20.88 billion in December, down from $20.91 billion in November but above the $20.36 billion recorded, the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) said.
Economists surveyed ahead of the announcement on average had expected a 0.1 per cent rise in sales for December, which takes in the Christmas shopping period. Sales had risen 0.1 per cent in November on month.
The ABS said the trend estimate for retail sales rose 0.2 per cent to $20.96 billion in December from November. The trend estimate further smoothes the seasonally adjusted numbers.
Sales rose 0.4 per cent in the December quarter from the third quarter, in chain volume terms, compared with expectations for a rise of 0.6 per cent.
